From Darkness to Light
Presented at Samma Karuna in Koh Phangan, From Darkness to Light is a site-specific mural by Mattia Montanari that maps the internal trajectory of self-actualization, moving from mental discord toward spiritual clarity. Grounded in a monochromatic, Zen-inspired aesthetic, the work spans a panoramic wall overlooking a gravel reflection garden, serving as a visual meditation on transformation.
The mural unfolds as a left-to-right narrative across six distinct stages of consciousness:
Impression: Dense, chaotic hatch marks against a dark backdrop represent the initial state of mental entropy, where unconscious memories exist in disarray.
Balance: Stacked, stone-like forms emerge from the shadow, symbolizing the deliberate stacking of memory and experience to build awareness out of obscurity.
Transition: A striking dualistic threshold where darkness gives way to light, marking the instantaneous leap into self-awareness.
Connection: As the background turns light, organic fluid shapes and brushstrokes reflect the mind adapting to new environments and establishing pure consciousness.
Alignment: Clean, parallel horizontal lines evoke clarity of purpose and stable, grounded energy.
Flow: Sweeping, calligraphic brushstrokes embody a seamless state of being, where intentional action elevates the true self toward enlightenment.
By pairing stark calligraphic mark-making with the physical Zen garden, Montanari bridges the space between the painted wall and the observer's environment, inviting viewers to reflect on their own movement from obscurity to inner peace.
